The Hong Kong Sevens is three days of rugby, costumes, and a city that knows exactly how to have a good time. Fifty years on — and now settled into Kai Tak — it’s still one of the biggest weekends on the calendar.
Dive straight in and you’ll have a great time. But if you want to do it properly, a few simple tips can take the weekend to another level.
1. Set your pace
The Hong Kong Sevens is a marathon — and that’s the whole point. Pace it right, and it only gets better as you go.
- Eat something substantial before you arrive
- Alternate drinks with water early
- Build your day gradually and (somewhat) intentionally — try not to peak in the first few hours
Sunday finals are the finish line, not Friday at 6pm!
2. Keep it easy
Max your potential.
- Make sure you have your ticket handy
- Embrace the MTR (it really is the easiest way in and out, especially at peak times)
- Use the outer concourses or upper levels at Kai Tak when it gets busy
Small decisions here carry the rest of the day.
3. Be South Smart
If you’re heading to the South Stand, embrace it; it’s a world of its own.
- Go early and take it all in before it fills up
- Bring a costume, or at least match the energy; you’ll feel it if you don’t. Check out our costume field guide here
- Buy more than one pint at a time to take back in (trust us)
- Look into South Stand ticket upgrades like the Pavilion Pass — shorter queues can make a big difference over the course of the day
Even if you only go once, it’s part of what makes the Hong Kong Sevens the biggest rugby party in the world.
4. Actually watch a match from start to finish
The Hong Kong Sevens is more than just a tournament — but key to it all is world-class rugby, almost every minute of the day!
- Check out the schedule, pick your must-see matches, and stay for the whole thing
- If you’re new to rugby, do a little research beforehand; legends have been made on the Hong Kong Sevens pitch
- Bonus points if you know when Hong Kong China are playing and plan around it; the stadium comes to life every time. Stay tuned for the full schedule.
Just one pause like this can ground the day, and remind you what we all came for.
5. More than rugby
Yes, we know what we just said. And rugby is at the heart of it — but it’s far from the only thing going on.
- From K-Pop to 90s dance and big singalong moments, there’s lots of live music to look forward to
- Beyond the main event, there’s plenty of sports happening throughout the week. Challenge yourself or cheer from the sidelines
- Keep an eye out for legends of the game roaming the stadium, grab an autograph from the front row, and join the Fan Zone fun on the big screen
- Make sure you check out the Fan Village for fresh air, new merch, cold beer and plenty of activities to mix it up
It’s easy to stay in your seat all day, but stepping out and exploring is often where the weekend opens up.
6. Pack smart
You don’t need much, but a few right things make all the difference.
- Have your Octopus or card on hand — Kai Tak is a cashless venue
- Bring sunscreen and a light layer or waterproof, in case the roof’s open
- You can never go wrong with wetwipes, bandaids, a powerbank and painkillers. Future you will be grateful
Final tip? Avoid early drama by making sure you bring only what’s allowed into the stadium.
7. Make it yours
The best weekends here don’t all look the same.
- First time? Do a full lap early. Each section of the stadium has its own energy, so grab a drink, take a walk, and settle where feels right
- Only coming for one day? Check the match schedule, Fan Village happenings and music lineup in advance
- Doing all three days? It helps to know the rhythm: Friday is the warm-up, Saturday is the party, Sunday is all about the rugby
- With kids (or just in need of a reset), the Fan Village is an easy escape, just steps from the stadium and open to all ticketholders
Some of the best moments happen in between — walking, queuing, bumping into people you know, making new friends. You’ll find your pace quickly once you’re in it.
