About

About

The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens started from humble beginnings in 1976. The tournament, which moved to the brand-new Kai Tak Stadium in 2025, now attracts over 40,000 visitors a day and is widely regarded as the jewel in the crown of World Rugby's HSBC SVNS Series.

This three-day event combines world-class rugby with a vibrant festive atmosphere, attracting international players and fans while celebrating Hong Kong's community spirit and love for the sport. 30 teams (15 men’s and 15 women’s) competed at the 2026 event.

History

History

The Hong Kong Sevens has grown into one of the most iconic events in world rugby, known for its unique atmosphere and world-class competition. In 2026, we proudly celebrated 50 years of the Hong Kong Sevens.

Over the past five decades, many of the greats in rugby sevens have graced the Hong Kong turf. Among them are the famed "Magnificent Seven" of Jonah Lomu, Waisale Serevi, David Campese, Christian Cullen, Ben Gollings, Zhang Zhiqiang and Eric Rush.

Melrose

Melrose Claymores

In the 2026 Melrose Claymores, Hong Kong China Men surpassed China and Japan to secure their third consecutive title. In the women's competition, Denmark claimed the title in their first-ever appearance at the Hong Kong Sevens, finishing ahead of Hong Kong China and Thailand.

While the Melrose Claymores is still a new competition (first played in 2024), it is also a nod to our long and proud history of showcasing the top teams in Asian sevens in Hong Kong. The Melrose features sword trophies donated by Melrose Rugby Football Club in Scotland, hosts of the world’s oldest sevens competition, the Melrose Sevens, founded in 1883. In a reciprocal gesture, the Hong Kong Sevens trophy is on offer to winners of one of the competitions at Melrose each year.

HSBC

HSBC SVNS Series

Hong Kong was one of the first international sevens tournaments and, over the past 50 years, has become synonymous with rugby sevens. In part, the success of the Hong Kong event inspired the start of a world series in 1999.

We are the only rugby union in the world to have hosted two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments (1997 and 2005). The 2026 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens also marked the first World Championship event under World Rugby's new three-tournament format.
