Hong Kong China men’s and women’s 7s players and coaching staff took a tour of their new Kai Tak Stadium home last week, ahead of the 2025 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. The city’s iconic sporting event will take place at Kai Tak Stadium from 28-30 March and is the first announced international sporting event to take place at the brand new 50,000-seater stadium (read more).
Both Hong Kong China men’s and women’s 7s teams will take part in the Melrose Claymores at the Hong Kong Sevens, a competition that showcases the top teams in Asian rugby sevens. This runs alongside the HSBC SVNS Series, with the world’s top 12 men’s and women’s teams also set to battle it out at Kai Tak Stadium.
Hong Kong China men won the inaugural Melrose Claymores in 2024, while Hong Kong China women finished as runners-up. In 2025 the men’s competition features the hosts alongside Japan and China, while the women’s competition sees the hosts take on Thailand and Kazakhstan (read more).
After the tour, players and coaches shared their excitement around the new stadium:
James Christie (Men’s 7s Captain)
“Just walking in with the roof closed and seeing the stands and the pitch for the first time was amazing. The window above the South Stand with all that beautiful light coming in, looking out onto the harbour was really quite something. There’ll be so much happening both inside and outside the stadium, and I know there will never be a dull moment over the weekend. 10,000 more fans means much more noise – we always say our fans are our 13th man, so if they’re happy, we’re happy!”
Shanna Forrest (Women’s 7s Player)
“My first impression of Kai Tak Sports Park was incredible – imagining the crowd and the noise in there is so exhilarating. The fan experience will be better than ever, the pitch is close to the stands so it will be really immersive. The Hong Kong Sevens can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for fans and players, and I know the new Kai Tak facilities are going to help elevate the sports landscape in Hong Kong.”
Paul John (Head Coach of Hong Kong China Sevens)
“The excitement in the squad is already starting to grow with Kai Tak coming. Everyone wants to be included. Players want to play, and everyone wants to play at Kai Tak.”
