Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) will host the first sporting action at the new 50,000 seat Kai Tak Stadium with the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China’s (USFHK) sevens tournament finals taking place on Sunday 5 January 2025. Over 10,000 players, officials and fans are expected to attend from participating universities, HKCR community partners and other stadium stakeholders and invited community groups.
The event will serve as a test run for HKCR and Kai Tak Sports Park officials to prepare the stadium for future events, most notably the hosting of the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens from 28-30 March in what will be the first international sports event held at Kai Tak Stadium.
Eighteen men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams from the USFHK rugby league will participate in the competition, which marks the debut event held inside the main stadium.
The USFHK Sevens tournament marks the second time that rugby has had pride of place in helping to test the Kai Tak Sports Park complex after the Hong Kong China 15s rugby team beat Brazil in a test match at the Youth Sports Ground in November.
“HKCR is once again honoured to have rugby front and centre at Kai Tak. Rugby has a thriving profile in Hong Kong at tertiary level and hosting The University Sports Federations of Hong Kong, China rugby sevens tournament with 20 teams will provide an essential operational warm-up for our event planning team to prepare for the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens this March.
“The opportunity for these players to enjoy what is a once-in-a-lifetime moment of running out onto the pitch in the new stadium will be an incredible experience, and one that we are proud to share with our playing community,” said Mr Chris Brooke, Chairman of Hong Kong China Rugby.
For the first time in over 30 years, the world-famous Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens will change venues from its long-time home at the Hong Kong Stadium in Causeway Bay to the magnificent new environs of the Kai Tak Stadium.
Kai Tak Stadium will enable the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2025 to offer a revolutionary new fan experience, including new hospitality areas for Sevens afficionados.
The new stadium is the house that sevens built, with a design that incorporates changing rooms for up to 20 teams. With last year’s Sevens returning to its traditional sold-out status for the first time since the pandemic, the opening of the new stadium and its expanded capacity of 50,000 seats is perfectly timed.
Those facilities will be put to the test for the first time on 5 January as Hong Kong’s aspiring elite rugby players become the first to take to the pitch beneath the retractable roof at Kai Tak.
For 5 January, all public entry will be from Gate F (please see the transportation and venue map below). Stadium seating at Level 02 concourse level will be open on the North, East and West Stands only.
Ticket sales for the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens are now open. A three-day event pass is HK$1,950 for adults, and HK$950 for children aged 12 and under. The Sevens’ general admission seating policy will remain in force, with tickets in all non-corporate or non-tournament seating areas inside the stadium being open on a first come, first served basis over the event weekend.
HKCR is also collaborating exclusively with renowned Hong Kong based travel agency KLOOK on selling single-day tickets to the event. A limited number of tickets are now available at HK$500 (Adult Friday), HK$1,200 (Adult Saturday), HK$1,200 (Adult Sunday), and HK$300 (Child Friday), HK$600 (Child Saturday), HK$600 (Child Sunday).
