50TH ANNUAL CATHAY/HSBC HONG KONG SEVENS SHARES SPORTING STAGE 120,000 TICKETS SOLD WITH THREE WEEKS TO GO

26 March 2026

From a modest, one-day event with 3,000 expectant fans in 1976, the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens has grown to become one of the must attend sportainment spectacles in Asia, with this year’s three-day extravaganza of rugby revelry surpassing 120,000 tickets sold three weeks out from kick-off.

This year, as the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens celebrates its 50th anniversary, the throngs of fans expected through the gates from 17-19 April can look forward to a festival of not just all things rugby, but to a variety of sports and fitness offerings including padel, fitness racing, netball and much more.

The 50th anniversary of the Sevens is not the only milestone being marked in Hong Kong rugby circles at present with the Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) men’s XV having qualified for the Rugby World Cup for the first time ever next year in Australia.

HKCR will celebrate its fifteens representatives at the Sevens on Saturday, 18 April, with the team out in force to meet and greet with local fans, starting with an open training session in the Sevens Fan Village, followed by a meet and greet autograph session.

The Sevens is also welcoming a very special visitor in 2026 – the famed William Webb Ellis Trophy, presented to the winners of the Rugby World Cup every four years. The trophy will be on display in the Fan Village during the men’s XVs training session on Saturday.

Capping their day in the Sevens spotlight, the members of the HKCR Men’s XVs programme will assume pride of place in joining the world-famous Hong Kong Sevens March Past (Saturday at 14:32). Don’t miss this chance to cheer Hong Kong’s hometown heroes on as they prepare to face the Australia Wallabies in the opening game of the Rugby World Cup in Perth in October 2027.

In the lead-up to the tournament, Hong Kong China Rugby will also showcase international wheelchair rugby on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 April at the Kai Tak Sports Park Sports Hall with the inaugural Hong Kong 5s competition.

Fast, fierce and full contact, wheelchair rugby 5s brings high-intensity action to the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens week. Fans can look forward to experiencing rugby as a truly inclusive sport as top athletes from across Asia battle it out in a dynamic format that showcases speed, skill, and grit.

On Thursday 16 and Friday 17 April, premier U18 boys and girls players from the best local schools and clubs and school teams from all over the world will compete in the Cathay Youth Invitational Sevens 2026 at the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground.

The inaugural Fast 4s Netball tournament will also take place on Thursday, 16 April, at the Sevens Fan Village situated at the Kai Tak Sports Park’s East Village. With local and overseas teams competing in a 4x4 mixed format in seven-minute halves, visitors can experience the high-speed action and razor-sharp moves associated with Fast 4s Netball.

Also in the Fan Village, Hong Kong China Rugby is partnering with the Asia Pacific Padel Tour (APPT) to host the APPT Grand Slam Platinum Hong Kong 2026 event. The Finals will run from Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 April with the knockout format pro-am tournament featuring top international players, alongside regional and local professional and amateurs.

Combining running, strength, machines, carries, and functional endurance, the exciting hybrid fitness event will be of interest to fitness gurus and those who are curious about reaching their full physical fitness potential.

For those starting out on their fitness journeys, JC Fit City will be the place to be.
