A campaign paying homage to 30 years of the iconic and the unforgettable – both on and off the pitch – at Hong Kong Stadium has reached its emphatic conclusion ahead of the 2024 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
The Greatest Hits Relay offered fans and followers locally, and all around the world, the chance to embark on a social media journey to celebrate the magic of the Hong Kong Sevens. Robbie McRobbie, CEO of Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR), commented: “A huge thanks to everyone who took the time to share their favourite Sevens memories. The relay was a very fitting way to celebrate this historic milestone – a collective nostalgic trip through 30 years of fun times at So Kon Po!”
Partners, players, former stars and brands were called upon to share some of the tournament's most epic moments, from nail-biting tries and upsets to euphoric celebrations and unbridled passion from the stands. In total, 31 posts across 31 days reached a combined audience of over 9 million across 5 social media platforms, with a million Instagram reels viewed and over 35,000 people jumping on board to like, comment and share.
“It was touching to see so many of our old friends contribute, including some of our Sevens Ambassadors, and of course our partners and sponsors – together we created a truly global campaign, and reminded ourselves just how special the Sevens family is” McRobbie continued.
By posting their own unforgettable memories, participants were also given a chance to win The Ultimate Rugby Fan Experience, worth $50,000. This included a Cathay Pacific travel voucher, tickets to the unrivalled hospitality experience of the Captain’s Corner, rooms at the Ovolo Southside Hotel, a Tomahawk dinner at Feather and Bone, a Sevens gift pack, an official SVNS ball, and, of course, a couple of beers. John Wright, who moved to Hong Kong in 1995 and has attended every Hong Kong Sevens tournament since 1996, was chosen as a worthy winner.
Fans can now relive the relay from start to finish by heading to the kick-off post on Instagram and following the tags in each caption, before making more history together at the Hong Kong Sevens in just over two weeks’ time.
