Laureus Sport for Good Foundation
In 2018, Laureus Sport for Good were appointed the HKRU’s inaugural Official Charity for the Sevens. A leading global sport for development organisation, Laureus Sport for Good supports programmes around the world who use sport to improve the lives of young people.
Laureus Sport for Good uses sport to reduce the impact of violence, conflict and discrimination, to enhance social and emotional development, to inspire healthy behaviour change and to increase educational achievements and employability skills.
Funds raised throughout the event will be split between Laureus-supported programmes within Hong Kong and around Asia. Laureus Sport for Good currently supports 16 organisations in 8 Asia countries, including three programmes in Hong Kong, and more than 160 programmes around the world.
The HKRU Community Foundation works closely with Laureus, and last year saw youngsters from the ‘Cool Play’ project in South Africa spend the week with their peers from the Hong Kong-based ‘Operation Breakthrough’ programme, utilising the power of sport to build friendships that bridge all divides.
Sean Fitzpatrick, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, said:
“The Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens is the flagship tournament on the rugby sevens circuit and one of Asia’s leading sporting events. This important and exciting partnership enables Laureus-supported programmes throughout the region to continue working towards their goal of using sport to help end violence, discrimination and disadvantage.”
The partnership with Laureus also reflects the HKRU’s leading role in using sport as a means for effecting positive social change in Hong Kong and its continuing drive, with the strong support of the Hong Kong Government, to make the city a regional “sport-for-change” hub.
