This year marks the first time the HKRU has appointed an official charity for the Sevens, and there could be no more appropriate inaugural partner than the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, a leading global charity that works to improve the lives of young people around the world through the power of sport.

The funds raised over the event will be split between Laureus-supported projects within Hong Kong such as Operation Breakthrough, and new applicants from charities around Asia - Laureus currently supports 18 organisations in 12 Asian countries, and more than 100 projects globally.

Laureus Ambassadors Li Xiaoping, Sir Steve Redgrave join Laureus Academy

The HKRU Community Foundation works closely with Laureus, and last year saw a series of joint events in the lead up to the Sevens under the theme of ‘Tackling Barriers through Sport’ – focusing on inclusivity, social cohesion and overcoming adversity. This year youngsters from the "Cool Play" project in South Africa will spend the week with their peers from Operation Breakthrough, utilising the power of sport to build friendships that bridge all divides. They will be joined by Laureus Academy Member Morne du Plessis and Ambassador Jean de Villiers, both former South African rugby captains.

Sean Fitzpatrick, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, said:

“The Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens is the flagship tournament on the rugby sevens circuit and one of Asia’s leading sporting events. This new and exciting partnership will enable Laureus-supported programmes throughout the region to continue working towards their goal of using sport to help end violence, discrimination and disadvantage.”

The partnership with Laureus also reflects the HKRU’s leading role in using sport as a means for effecting positive social change in Hong Kong and its continuing drive, with the strong support of the Hong Kong Government, to make the city a regional “sport-for-change” hub.
