Fiji lead charge into HK Cup quarters - Australia stun Series leaders South Africa - Japan, HK, Russia, Italy in contention for promotion
Defending champions Fiji finished Saturday's pool rounds with three convincing wins, scoring 141 points and conceding just 12 to head the charge into Sunday's knock-out rounds in the Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
England, New Zealand and Australia also won all three of their pool matches, the Australians beating HSBC Sevens World Series leaders South Africa 10-7 to top their pool. Fiji now face the USA in the Cup quarter-finals. England play South Africa, New Zealand play Wales and Australia will face Canada.
In the separate World Series promotion qualifier, 12 teams have been vying to join those top sides as a core team and compete at all nine rounds of the 2014/15 Series, with hosts Hong Kong, Japan, Italy and Russia reaching the semi-finals, to be played on Sunday.
Japan beat Tunisia 38-7 in the first quarter-final and face Russia, who beat Uruguay 21-7. Italy beat Zimbabwe in sudden death extra time and will play Hong Kong, who beat Chile 10-7.
