8th Federation of International Touch (FIT) Touch World Cup Hong Kong Squad Announcement

22 April, 2015

The Hong Kong Touch Association (HKTA) on Tuesday 21st April held a ceremony to announce the team that will represent Hong Kong at the 8th Federation of International Touch (FIT) Touch World Cup to be held in Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia from 29 April to 3 May 2015, and present them with their playing shirts. More than 100 teams representing over 30 countries will join hosts and defending Open division World Champions Australia, with Hong Kong lining up alongside 5th seeds England and 8thseeds USA in the Mixed Open division preliminary round.

"This is the first time that Hong Kong will have appeared at the World Cup, and marks the culmination of an ambitious 5 year development plan," explains Hong Kong Coach Ben Worthington, who himself represented England at the 1999 World Cup. "In 2010 we formed a national development squad, and commenced a rigorous training and selection programme that has included overseas tours to New Zealand and Australia, and our first FIT sanctioned internationals against China in December 2014. We have recently returned from a training camp in Singapore, and we're ready and extremely excited about the challenge ahead - our objective is a top 15 finish overall and to be in the first 3 of the Asian teams."

HKTA Chairman Marco Wong paid tribute to the hard work of the players and coaches; "Of the 16 players in the squad, 15 are Hong Kong born and of local heritage, and the progress they have made over the past 5 years is a great testament to the enthusiasm and commitment of our coaches Ben and ex-Hong Kong rugby international Zanio Yong. I'd also like to thank the Hong Kong Rugby Union for their continued support, and our sponsors ANZ whose generosity has made this dream a reality. Along with the World Cup participation we are also celebrating the 10th anniversary of our own ANZ International Touch Championships on Saturday 9th May, with Fiji Airways flying in a special Fijian invitational side to join us, so this is an exciting period for Hong Kong Touch!"
